CHALLENGE

Cubex®, a global provider of health care storage management technology systems needed to develop its next generation automated dispensing systems that would reduce medication errors, improve pharmacy workflow and increase inventory management throughout for facilities. The company also needed to address more stringent storage and access laws due to the opioid crisis and regulatory powers that varied from state to state. Additionally, the product the company was supplying was the property of a 3rd party. Cubex was looking for its own, branded solution.

SOLUTION

Cubex utilized ATOM Innovation’s proven development process to undertake an overhaul of their existing cabinets and inventory management systems. ATOM began with its STREAM Research process - using both qualitative and quantitative feedback from users in both veterinary and medical facilities - to uncover challenges and unmet needs in the previous systems and capture insights that would drive the product development. The research identified a number of issues with the existing storage solutions including size and placement of the displays; access to the drawers; power interfaces; backup battery; installation challenges, and keyboard access.

With this input, ATOM created two cabinet solutions that resolved all of these problems and more. The display, scanning, and printing peripherals were all integrated into the structure to provide a more compact footprint connection. Cable management and connections were all addressed under the top cover which allowed for ease of servicing. The display location and position allowed for better user interface and experience. The system’s drawer could now be accessed by all users with a more manageable keyboard. Additionally, larger and sturdier casters allowed the tower carts to be easily maneuvered or wheeled to different sites. Lastly, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) required tamperproof mounting interfaces for both the counter and tower cabinet were created to secure the systems in place. Finally, each of the two systems were optimized by sharing major components and parts to streamline Design for Manufacturing and Assembly at lower part prices..

RESULTS

CUBEX V2 Mini (counter) and Tower offer a DEA-compliant solution for the storage, dispensing and management of medical supplies and controlled substances/pharmaceuticals. The CUBEX V2 Systems features 3.5 times the storage capacity than the competitive solutions, with automated access for both active and back stock of controlled supplies and medications. Each system provides ease of access through a controlled User interface and software allowing staff to quickly access supplies and pharmaceuticals with all transactions automatically recorded, without searching for keys and manual logbooks. It also provides secure Biometric fingerprint ID for every access assuring accountability and tracking into facilities. Reports are generated on demand with bi-directional connectivity across an installation for record management and controls minimizing inventory reordering and missed charges. Both the V2 Mini and Tower solutions will reduce hours spent managing pharmacy and supply, improved staff accountability, reduced in-hospital inventory, improved management and efficiency of the clinic with a relatively quick ROI.
