Product performance requirements and concerns revealed using STREAM Research
CHALLENGE
Legrand is a global company and a leading provider of electrical products and cable management systems. Legrand approached ATOM to help define outdoor power solutions for public and corporate spaces.
SOLUTION
Concept Development via STREAM Research – Research, design, and development occurred together through an iterative process To create innovative solutions, ATOM followed a Human Centered Design Approach to understand the power needs and applications of users. A private online community of 350+ facility managers, architects, space planners, landscape architects, MEP engineers, electricians and IT installers were engaged over the course of 5 months, where more than 50,000 data points were evaluated.
Remotely engaging with a dedicated group of professionals through weekly surveys and open discussion boards, we were able to understand outdoor space needs, power requirements, environmental challenges, and pinpoint unique opportunities for innovation.
Prototyping and testing SEED concepts were accomplished through digital participatory design charrettes, exploring concepts through live brainstorming sessions with seasoned professionals, inspiring more than 50 different ideas.
Through several refinement phases and concept validation testing, seven different product concepts were validated as viable outdoor power solutions, including aesthetics, functionality, and definition of technical specifications.
RESULTS
The response to our refined concepts was overwhelmingly positive, with more than 80% of our research community interested in development of these products. ATOM presented its research and findings to the global summit meeting for review and approval with resounding approval of outcomes by the company. Legrand selected two of the ATOM generated concepts to move forward with for new technology lines, each expected to generate $30 million in revenue.
